    International Climate Action Day 2024 Celebrations in Tirunelveli District on 25.10.2024Reported by: Muthukumar S, Green Fellow Tirunelveli District In observance of International Climate Action Day, work on establishing a mangrove fishery park was initiated by the District Collector on October 25, 2024, at Vijaya Pathi beach village in Tirunelveli district. Since there were no mangrove saplings planted in the District previously, a trial project in the district involved planting 500 mangrove saplings at the confluence of the Aruviyaru. These saplings were brought by Seed Trust and planted by their staff. The total cost, Rs. 80,000, was funded through CSR support from Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank.Around 300 students from nearby schools and colleges in Vijayapathi and surrounding areas observed the mangrove planting activity. Following this, students and the public were explained about the importance of mangrove forests in addressing climate change. The District Collector, Dr. K.P. Karthikeyan,I.A.S., addressed the students and the public on the significance of Climate Action Day, stating, "Though Tirunelveli district comprises five types of landscapes Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neythal, and Paalai it often faces challenges from climate change. It is essential for everyone to unite and act together to combat these challenges."The students also participated in a climate change quiz, and 20 students who answered correctly received environmental books as prizes. Following the District Collector's directive, extensive seed sowing activities were conducted in coastal villages. Additionally, tree planting activities were organized in schools and colleges in observance of Climate Action Day. The event was attended by District Revenue Officer Tmt. M. Suganya, Sub-Collector Thiru. Arpith Jain, MGNREGS APO Thiru. Isakkiyappan, Special Tehsildar Thiru. Selvan, Radhapuram BDO Thiru. Augustus, Redcross District coordinator Thiru. Sabesan, Block Coordinator Thiru. Isaikkumar, AD of Fisheries, AD of Horticulture, village panchayat presidents, and other concerned staff, along with students from surrounding schools and colleges.
